IELTS Listening: strategies that actually help

5 min read · updated 1 July 2026

The Listening test rewards preparation as much as ability. The recording plays once, so the goal is to be ready before each answer arrives rather than reacting after it has passed.

Use the reading time

Before each section you get a few seconds to read the questions. Use them to underline key words and decide what kind of answer each gap needs. Walking in cold is the single biggest cause of lost marks.

Listen for signposts

Speakers signal what is coming with words like 'however', 'the main problem', 'finally', or 'actually'. These often mark the exact moment an answer appears, or a correction that changes an earlier one.

Beware of distractors

The test deliberately mentions a wrong option first, then corrects it — for example giving a time and then changing it. Keep listening until the speaker has clearly settled on the final answer.

Respect the instructions

'Write ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER' means exactly that. Two words where one is allowed scores zero, even if the idea is right. Copy spellings of names exactly as they are spelled out.
