How to get Band 7 in IELTS
Band 7 is the level many universities and skilled-migration programmes ask for, and it is a realistic target with focused practice. This guide explains what Band 7 actually requires and how to build towards it in each of the four skills.
What does Band 7 mean?
A Band 7 user is described as a 'good user' who handles complex language well, though with occasional inaccuracies. In practice it means you can follow academic talks and texts, express ideas clearly, and make only minor, non-blocking errors.
Remember that your overall band is the average of the four skills, rounded to the nearest half band. That means a weaker skill can be balanced by a stronger one, so it pays to know where your easy marks are.
The raw scores you need
Listening and Reading are marked out of 40 and converted to a band. As an approximate guide, Band 7 usually needs about 30 out of 40 in Listening and about 30 out of 40 in Academic Reading. General Training Reading is scored on a stricter scale and needs roughly 34 out of 40.
Use the band score calculator on this site to see the exact conversion and to work backwards from your target.
Listening: turn 25s into 30s
Most people lose Band 7 in Listening through small slips rather than big misunderstandings. Tighten these up and the score rises quickly.
- Read the questions in the pause before each section so you know exactly what to listen for.
- Predict the type of answer — a number, a name, a place — before you hear it.
- Write answers as you hear them; do not wait, because the next answer is already coming.
- Check spelling and word limits carefully; a correct idea spelled wrong scores zero.
Reading: manage the clock
Academic Reading gives you three long passages and 60 minutes with no extra transfer time. Time management is usually the deciding factor at Band 7.
- Spend no more than 20 minutes per passage; move on and come back if stuck.
- Skim first for the general idea, then scan for the specific words the question targets.
- For True/False/Not Given, decide carefully between 'False' (the text contradicts it) and 'Not Given' (the text simply does not say).
- Never leave a blank — there is no penalty for a wrong answer.
Writing and Speaking: raise the ceiling
For Writing, answer the exact question, organise clearly with paragraphs, and vary your sentence structures. Accuracy and range of grammar matter more than long, complicated words.
For Speaking, aim for fluent, extended answers rather than short ones, use a range of tenses, and do not be afraid of natural pauses. Fluency and coherence carry a quarter of the marks on their own.
Frequently asked questions

Can I get an overall 7 with a 6.5 in one skill?
